DIY Crepe Paper Butterfly

Need an easy craft to keep you or a little one busy? Have a butterfly lover at home? This crepe paper butterfly doesn’t require many supplies or instructions and is pretty fun to make. It is a great way to get your creative juices going and to bring some spring colors into your home!

Materials:

To begin, click on the butterfly template link. Print the butterfly outline out on a sheet of card stock. After printing, cut out the butterfly shape. This is what you’ll be gluing the crepe paper on.

Next, you will need to cut out some little squares of crepe paper. I made mine about 1″ x 1″. I used four colors and about 20 squares of each. You might need more or less, depending on how closely you glue them together.

Once you have your square of crepe paper ready, begin by spreading some glue on the butterfly shape. I began with just enough glue to cover the top half of one wing. Then, take one square of crepe paper, crumple it up, then press it into the glue. Repeat with a different color and place it next to your first one. Continue until you fill the area you had spread the glue. Once full, spread glue in another area and begin adhering more crumpled up crepe paper. Soon, the whole butterfly will be full of colored crepe paper!

Now, you just need to add the antennae! Simple fold a long pipe cleaner in half, curl the ends around your finger, then glue or tape to the back of your butterfly. And, just like that, you’re done! You can use this same technique on different shapes, like a bunny! Or a dinosaur! Let your creativity guide you.
